The Flyer is a bottling we have reserved for special vineyards: Maybe a vineyard we won’t always have access to or maybe one where the vineyard owner asked us to make their wine, because that’s what happens here in our small community of fellow winemakers. This 2013 bottling fits the bill, from the Susanna’s Vineyard in Russian River Valley. This Pinot Noir vineyard was first planted in 2006 and we were the first winery to explore the promise of the vineyard. We sure like it so far, and we bet you will too.
Susanna’s Vineyard has long put a spell on us (think Nina Simone, sultry and bittersweet) and we’ve once again returned here to the coolest part of the coast for an encore edition of The Flyer. Rich in color with a ruby hue, jammy on the nose with dark red fruit and violets accented by cloves, it grabs your attention. The unique clonal selections show in the full-bodied and weighty, voluptuous and somewhat supple mouthfeel. A silkiness leads to complex layers of forest floor, black cherry and plums, with hints of white pepper and earthy spiciness. Nina was known for flying ever higher. We think she’d approve of this wine.
